When asked to describe my musical tastes, the word I’d most often use is “eclectic”. And as a result, I’ve been meaning to get around to the whole “post lines from X songs and let people guess what they are” meme for a while, but just never got around to it.
So, tonight I have. Here’s a delightful trip through the familiar and the obscure that is known as “My iTunes on Shuffle”. Remember, no fair doing Internet searches! (As a note, I did skip over songs which either have no lyrics (duh) or which had the title of the song in the opening lines of the verse.).
Enjoy!
1. Down by the river, the water’s running low as I wander underneath the trees
2. As I walk through this wicked world, searching for light in the darkness of insanity
3. The fly on the coachwheel told me that he got it and he knew what to do with it
4. They made up their minds and they started packing. They left before the sun came up that day
5. Politicians preaching on TV saying nothing but vote for me.Everybody everywhere, we got a love
6. Gonna take a chance on her, one bullet in the cylinder
7. Whatcha gonna choose the poison or the lines? Lived with crazy pain in all your life
8. You donβt have to take the bar exam to see what youβve done is Ignoramus 103
9. Kelly is raising her son; his dad left just after the birth
10. So you think you’re a Romeo playing a part in a picture-show?
11. The Tupamaros got a platinum card, all right. I got a heart of gold and it’s time to get hard and I like it
12. He left a card, a bar of soap and a scrubbing brush next to a note that said “use these down to your bones”
13. Tears fill up my eyes I’m washed away with sorrow, and somewhere in my mind I know there’s no tomorrow
14. It don’t matter what you do, I don’t care what you say, It don’t matter where you go, honey
15. I was trained in Arizona in a secret desert camp where we did night manoeuvres without a lighted lamp
16. Here I go, going down, down, down; my mind is a blank, my head is spinning around and around
17. What may I ask is never enough; It’s never too sweet and it’s never too rough
18. Peter said to Paul you know all those words we wrote are just the rules of the game and the rules are the first to go
19. Floating in the summer sunshine, we are flying, we are blue; Falling like a summer raindrop, like a teardrop, like the dew
20. Lost track of what i had to get done, not meeting anyone, stuck in one place while the snowflakes all come down

2 is so familiar, but I can’t bring it to the front of my mind. Other than that, I got zippo. π Had a feeling.

I only know 4 and 18. Clearly I need to get music recs from you. π

Same boat here. Now I’m kickin’ myself.

It was the only one on the list that I even had a chance at. And I thought _my_ iPod was eclectic!

#10 was the only one which I had any hint of recognition, and I couldn’t identify it…

Arrrgh. I think I never understood the 2nd line, so I didn’t stand a chance on that one. But once you said that, the music popped into my head.
ailsaek
Pooh. That was the only one I knew.

4. Fastball -- The Way
10. Supertramp -- The Long Way Home
bikergeek
2. “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love and Understanding”, Elvis Costello (but didn’t Nick Lowe write it?)
4. “The Way,” Fastball
ldwheeler
4. “The Way” by Fastball
18. Sounds like “Girl in the War” by Josh Ritter
I know I know #10; it’s evading me. *sigh* Something from the ’80s, I thinks.

OK, now that I’ve posted and am viewing other responses, I’m kicking myself repeatedly. Now if it’d been something from “The Logical Song,” that would’ve been no problem …

Hee!
9 is Write Me A Song by Edwin McCain. π

I was pretty sure that I wouldn’t recognize many of yours, and this prediction proved out. I knew #10, but that has been repeatedly identified already. There’s something slightly familiar about #16 for me, so I will probably say “Oh, yeah, now I can hear it” when it is identified, but other than that, I’ve got nothing.

(Coming in after work; some of these are certain to have been guessed already.)
2. “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding,” by Nick Lowe. (Most people, of course, know the Elvis Costello version.)
6. “Glad to See You Go”, by the Ramones. Wish I’d seen them live; they rocked.
10. “Take the Long Way Home” by Supertramp
15. “The Secret Agent” by Hawkwind, you betcha
surrdave
Dude. Most of those hover between dark and ose. Put in some McCartney.

I can never get any of these because I listen to so little music with lyrics and even when I do listen to music with lyrics, I rarely notice them. However, I was totally excited that I actually recognized one of these! Then it turned out to be the one that everybody got. π

Same for me, except that I fared worse: I recognise none of them! ‘>_<'

Stumped. Bowled. Probably leg before wicket as well. I know none of the above.
Time I did another one of these…

I cheated and googled for #17, because I knew I knew those lyrics from somewhere. Now I’m kicking myself, cos I had that song on repeat a couple of weeks ago. (Not saying what it is, cos like I said, I cheated.)
