Ovaries replenlish eggs, study suggests

Diane Duane (outofambit) points to article in the Boston Globe about a study which indicates that one of the things we thought we knew about the function of mammalian reproduction may be fundamentally wrong:

In a finding that could someday revolutionize fertility treatments, researchers yesterday reported evidence that appears to topple a decades-old tenet of reproductive biology: that girls are born with all the eggs they’ll ever have, a pool that dwindles and degenerates with age.

[…]

Clearly, they needed even better evidence. They gathered more. In particular, they took a mouse that had been genetically engineered so that every cell in its body glowed green under fluorescent light, cut its ovary in half, and grafted onto it pieces of a normal mouse’s ovary.

In three or four weeks, they found green-glowing eggs that had been surrounded by a layer of nongreen supporting cells to make what is called a follicle. That mixture, Tilly said, indicated that green egg stem cells had migrated into the nongreen pieces of ovary and started to produce new eggs that then attracted the supporting cells they needed to form follicles.

If the study can be reproduced and substantiated, this could be a truly revolutionary development in biology. Very nifty!

Of course, it all makes sense now!

This Modern World

Interesting Link

Picked up from Warren Ellis’s “Die Puny Humans” blog:

How News Travels On The Internet

I wonder if he’ll run for president next…

Kinky Friedman to run for Governor of Texas

“There are no skeletons in my closet. They are all bleaching on a beach somewhere,” he said.

You want to know Kinky’s stand on gun control?

“I do not carry a gun myself, so if someone is going to shoot me, they better remember to bring their own weapon.”

On abortion?

“I am not pro-life, I am not pro-choice, I am pro football.”

Gay marriage

A lot of people are writing a lot of things about the whole gay marriage issue. I considered adding my voice, but to be honest,

a) the whole issue leaves me baffled and weary, and
b) Others have said almost everything I want to say anyway

So instead, here’s a link to a few of the better thoughts I’ve read on the issue recently:

Bob Harris posting in Tom Tomorrow’s blog

Three good entries in a row by John Scalzi:

Addendum

rmjwell on how to talk to and understand opponents.

and finally, Mark Morford at his irreverant best.

In the end, I know, know in my heart, that this too shall pass, and that we will take one more brave step towards enlightenment and away from ignorance and bigotry. It will take time, and there will be suffering, and we will sometimes wonder if it will happen in our lifetime, but we will move forward and we will see a better world ahead of us, because the only weapons they have is fear and hate. Our weapon is love, and it is mightier than theirs.

If you’ve a little to spare

You may have seen this already in other journals. No matter. I’ve been through what this family is going through, and I know all the small horrors that come with it. I’ve already cross-checked with enough people I know to be trustworthy to know that this is legitimate, so if you have something to spare, please consider directing it this way.

In other news, Bakersfield prostitute strips attacker and takes him to police

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) – A skinny rapist met his match in an angry, 275-pound prostitute, police said.

Adrian Castillo Ramirez, 140 pounds, allegedly tried to sexually assault a 24-year-old Bakersfield prostitute who was nearly twice his weight.

But she took his knife, stripped him naked and paraded him in front of other prostitutes, after asking how many of them had ever been forced into sex at knifepoint. Then she tried to take him – still naked – to the police station, reports said.

Castillo was charged with failing to register as a sex offender, and with committing forcible sex acts on the 24-year-old and on a 37-year-old woman in a previous incident. He also was convicted of four counts of rape in 1988.

Castillo pleaded innocent Wednesday, and is being held in lieu of $250,000 bail, police said.

In an interview with Diane Sawyer, the most amazing thing came out of President Bush’s mouth:

DIANE SAWYER: But stated as a hard fact, that there were weapons of mass destruction as opposed to the possibility that he could move to acquire those weapons still ?

PRESIDENT BUSH: So what’s the difference?

DIANE SAWYER: Well ?

PRESIDENT BUSH: The possibility that he could acquire weapons. If he were to acquire weapons, he would be the danger

is it just me, or did he not just say, more or less, the equivalent of “Well, it depends on what the definition of the word ‘is’ is.”?
