A Rather Pleasant Evening

Aside from the panic of not being able to find the cat, the rest of the evening was very pleasant.

mrpsyklops is in town for a conference, and we had made plans to get together for an evening of dinner and hanging out. He showed up at 6:30 or so, just after I had managed to finally locate Jenna and then put the house back into a semblance of order.

We sat around and chatted about his conference, and current politics. I showed him some clips from The Daily Show, which he had never seen, and then pulled the most recent episode of that programme up on the TiVo. We had a good time with that, and were just finishing it up when kitanzi got home. While she made the wonderful steaks that Robert had brought, we watched most of an episode of Mythbusters, which he also had not seen.

Finally, we indulged ourselves in one of our favourite pastimes — introducing someone who has never seen it before to the BBC comedy Coupling. I thought a few times he was going to hurt himself laughing. One thing I have to say for Coupling….it has enduring humour. Even though kitanzi and I have seen the episodes enough times now that we can practically recite them, they’re still funny. 🙂

Oh, I also earlier in the evening got Robert to read a bit of Warren Ellis’s Transmetropolitan. So it was a fun evening of exposing Robert to new things. He seemed to have a good time, and I certainly enjoyed his company and conversation.

We really should make an effort to be sociable more often. We talked at one point about having a Firefly party, and now that we have the DVDs it’s a good time. Hrm, plans to make…

Snow!

Yay, snow! It snowed it snowed it snowed!

Living my entire life in the southeastern United States, snow has never been the sort of thing we got enough of really lose its fascination. I love waking up and finding a soft blanket of white covering everything, seeing the frost in the trees and the air being impossibly crisp.

I love standing outside in the dark when the snow is falling heavy around me. I love curling up next to a fire with a good book, while outside heaven drifts down to the earth in tiny flakes.

Yeah, I like snow. Even if it’s just a half and inch and the whole city shuts down as a result. Folks from up north like to make fun of us for this, but I don’t care. I know the reasons, and I know that it will just be a memory in two days time. There’s no need to shovel, or salt the roads, or do any of those things, because it’s just a moment, and the moment will soon be gone.

But until then, there’s snow, and I am seven years old again and school is closed and mom has told me I can go out and play until lunchtime.

Bliss.

Wonderful Weekend

Wow, I’m almost caught up to the present. I don’t know what I’ll do then. Write about current events, I guess. 🙂

Boskone (Sunday and Monday)

Wrapping up the weekend, there was music, food, more music, yet more music, good conversation, good snuggles, and all around a great time.

Catching up again

Well, so far I haven’t done a very good job of keeping up with my unofficial and unannounced pledge to post actual me-content more often. As I said way back when I started this journal, I don’t tend to like talking about myself very much. But since you’re obviously reading this hoping for SOME kind of content, I suppose I should endeavor to supply you with it. 🙂

Gafilk was tremendous fun. There were too many highlights to really mention, but I will say that unclechristo was as amazing as always, and it was wonderful to get him to a con over here, callylevy was sweet and amazing and talented and everything we expected from her, quadrivium did a superb job of toastmistressing (holding herself to a much higher standard than we were, really, poor dear), and Rand and Adam were, well, Rand and Adam. Then there was Howie. Wow. He was still feeling a bit under it all, which, all things considered, was still pretty good shape to be in. But no matter what state his body was in, his verve and personality and wit were as strong as everything I’d ever heard and more.

We had more people at this convention than ever before, and while it was exhilarating to be around all those wonderfully talented people, I spent far too much time running around being frantic to really absorb it.

On the other hand, it was a weekend filled with personal interaction with friends and loves, and that’s what a con is for. Some of it was, of course, absolutely none of your business, other than to note that it was nice to finally put some theories into practice. (*snuggles someone very snuggly* 🙂

Normally, I couldn’t pick a *highlight* of the con, but this once, I can. The banquet was un-freaking-believable. First, there was the incredible band, with Jodi (musesmuse) on vocals and backed by the “Gafilk House Band” (Mary, Dave (surrdave), Brian (siliconchef), and Blaise). This would have been cool enough, but there was a dance floor, and we took great advantage of it. I got to dance with kitanzi, alymid (twice), mokatiki, and plaid_dragon. What a wonderful time. Thanks to all of those lovely ladies for a wonderful evening.

I did get to play a little bit at the dead dog, but we went home at a reasonable hour, because kitanzi had to get up and work the next morning. And that’s as much of a Gafilk report as you get this year.

Away too long

Whew. It’s been a busy time here since the start of the year, between various houseguests, and GaFilk, and general sickness around the house. I keep thinking “Boy, I need to catch up on LJ”, and then I think about how much there is to write, and I think “Maybe later.” So, without further ado, let’s go back to just before GaFilk weekend and see if we can’t get caught up. 🙂

Beginning a New Year

kitanzi and I spent a quiet New Years Day just enjoying each other’s company while our house guests spent the day with Bill and ladyat at Bedlam House. telynor brought them over about 5pm, and we made plans to go out to eat.

Ring out the Old, Ring in the New

Had to work on New Years Eve, but we got let go about 3:30pm, which was nice. kitanzi wasn’t so lucky, and not only had to work her full shift (which lets out at 8pm), she got stuck on a call at the last minute and didn’t actually get away until a half hour after her shift ended. Such is the life of support folk, though. She came home in need some serious festivity, so we quickly ate the sloppy joes I had prepared for dinner and then set off for New Years Eve at Bedlam House.

Catching up the year

Well, it’s been a pretty busy week since Christmas Day.

A Bit of Cheer, A Bit of Melancholy

We’re 2/3s of the way towards establishing a tradition of seeing a movie on Christmas Day. Last year, we waited until the 25th to see The Two Towers, so this year we decided to go see Return of the King. Since khaosworks was in town and hadn’t seen it yet either, we offered to swing by and pick up him up from Bedlam House.

When we arrived, the entire Sutton family was in the middle of doing their Christmas morning gift exchange, so we sat awhile to wait before dragging Terence away. I spent some time playing with the baby and keeping him in good humour while wrapping paper and bows flew every which way and people reacted to their gifts.

At some point, both kitanzi and I were struck with a real sense of…displacement. We were observers in the middle of this wonderful, warm family dynamic, an interweaving of traditions and customs born of years of love and care and we became painfully aware that we didn’t have anything like that in our life. I haven’t been home for Christmas in 15 years, for a variety of reasons that no longer seem important. I doubt it matters, since I’m sure that my family is no longer doing the big get-togethers like they used to do when my grandfather was alive, anyway.

Still, for all the feeling of nostalgia for something i never actually have been a part of, it was really wonderful to watch the sheer joy of the season enacted in a living room between a family only starting to expand into its next generation. This is the family Christmas of post cards and story telling, and it’s really happening in at least one house in Atlanta. If someone ever manages to bottle that, send me a six-pack.
